Newsbrief: Jagex's long-running online game Runescape has begun experimenting with microtransactions with a mini-game that allows players to spend real world currency.
The game's most recent update has given players the option to buy more turns for the "Squeal of Fortune" mini-game, from which players can earn additional items and bonuses. This addition sets an unusual precedent for Runescape, as it has traditionally relied only on a standard subscription model.
Jagex said on its official forums that the new system is intended to give "impatient" players a chance to benefit from the mini-game at a faster rate. The company did not confirm whether it plans to add additional microtransactions to Runescape going forward.
